Create Your Online Profile and Sell More Art (post from an inspire website "How to Sell Art Online")

Dear Graphic Designer,

I have read a good article for your inspiration on www.artbusiness.com. This Article is very inspire me. Let's check it out:

Q: I'm ready to start selling my art online. Please visit my website and tell me what you think. What about paying for gallery or exhibition space or a web page on large art websites or links on large art websites with lots of other artists?
A: Selling art online is a bit of a catch-22 for artists. One of the main ways people get to your website is to type your name into search engines like Google, locate your web site on the results page, and click over to it. People who don't know your name but who might be interested in your kind of art probably won't find you. Sure, some might land on your website by chance, but they're usually looking for something else and rarely stick around long enough to take a good look at your art, let alone buy it.

As for linking or renting space on large art websites, that's usually pretty futile, and a good way to waste money. Thousands of group art websites exist, each one with anywhere from dozens to hundreds of artists, some with more. Throwing your art into the mix makes you kind of like a flea on a dog-- hard to find-- like entering your art in a group show with several hundred thousand pieces, and hoping against hope that somehow someone singles you out and likes your art enough to buy-- like winning the lottery. Get it?

That said, the Internet is becoming increasingly important as a marketing tool, artists and the art business included. Plenty of art is already selling online, more and more art will be sold online, and artists' websites are fast becoming the primary vehicles for showing work and presenting credentials (assuming this hasn't happened already).

Regardless of your current situation, you can make your website work for you, but you have to do it in conjunction with social networking websites, traditional ways of getting your art out there like showing wherever and whenever you get the chance, networking within your art community, participating in juried and non-juried shows, and so on. Assuming you're doing all of this and more, and assuming you're respectful of any galleries or agents who currently represent you, here are some ways to spiff up your online profile:
To begin with, buy a domain name like www.yourname.com, www.yournameart.com, www.yournamepaintings.com, or www.yournameartist.com and have it hosted by a hosting service. DO NOT use free websites, web space you get from your Internet provider, or web space on your friend's scented candle and incense site.

Free websites degrade your art with annoying third-party vibrating banner ads and pop-up windows (your art and offshore gambling-- what a great combination!). Free sites and/or web space from your Internet provider are hard for search engines to find, and tacking your webpage onto someone else's website makes your art look like an afterthought or a hobby rather than something you take seriously.

Once you've got a domain name, make that website about one thing and one thing only-- YOUR ART. Do not show pictures of your dog, talk about your garden, or drone on about how bovine growth hormone is depleting the ozone layer unless, of course, these passions represent integral aspects of your art.

Personalize your website. Make it feel like an actual place, a state of being, a frame of mind, an environment, an atmosphere, somewhere that's uniquely you. Generic portfolio-style artist websites with standard menus like "about the artist," "galleries," "shows," and so on are boring-- there are countless thousands and thousands of them. Portfolio sites may be good for presenting your art to people in the trade for possible shows or representation, but regular people who buy art because it impacts or attracts them in some way will not be captivated. Include an online portfolio section for the pros, but the reality you create for regular folks who stop by to see what you do will be what ultimately sells your art. Remember-- selling art with images on a computer screen is very different from selling art out of your studio or at a gallery.

Write about yourself and your art in the first person. Why do you make art? Why are you an artist? How do you use art to express yourself? Being able to answer these questions is good no matter what the circumstances. On your website, people who feel like they're getting to know you, like they're connecting a human being with your art, are more likely to buy than people who don't make that kind of connnection. Additional incentive for those of you averse to writing: Search engines can't find a website with no text.

Give reasons to buy your art. Talk about why people own it, why they like it, what it does for them (not what you want it to do, but what people tell you it does), how it enriches their lives, what they like most about it, how long it takes you to make it, what it represents, that sort of thing. As a gallery owner once told me, "No art sells itself," and this is especially true online.
Assume visitors to your site know little or nothing about either art in general or you as an artist. Keep things simple, start at the beginning, and explain what you do step-by-step. Most importantly, write in language that ANYBODY can understand. People like having some kind of grip on what they're looking at. If they can't figure it out, they're sure not gonna buy it. People who already know you or who know art will skip to the appropriate sections. Those who plow through your entire site, still can't get enough, and who want to know more will contact you.

If you decide to have a links page, keep it to a minimum. For example, share the same few links with a small circle of artist friends or art-related websites. I can't tell you how many times I go onto a website, check out its links page-- particularly if it's full of fun and entertaining places to go-- like the links better than the site itself, and leave never to return. On the other hand, providing useful practical links (like artbusiness.com for example) will increase your respect among artists, and could even drive traffic to your site-- people who will want to keep track of what resources you're finding online.

Use effective keywords in your title lines and in your text. Keywords are your ticket to high rankings on search engines and the only way that people who don't know you exist can find you. For example, keywords can be used to attract people who collect the kind of art that you make, but who have no idea you make it. If you sculpt coat hangers into baby ducks, use keywords that attract coat hanger baby duck sculpture collectors. If necessary, hire someone who can suggest keyword strategies based on your art.

Resist the temptation to show every work of art you've ever made, and make sure the large majority of what you do show is available for sale. Show too much sold work and people who visit the site will feel like all they get to pick from are leftovers. Keep your total selection to a maximum of 50 pieces or so. Too much work or too many different kinds of work overwhelms and confuses viewers, making them less likely to buy. Those who want to see more will ask.

Several more basics:

► Use good clear detailed images of your art that download fast (duh).

► Make sure all of your art is priced. Most people don't like to ask prices and rather than ask, they leave.

► Provide clear instructions for how someone can buy your art and how you're going to get it to them.

► Provide plenty of contact information so that anyone can ask questions. Answer all questions fast.
A look into the future:

► Make your art easy to buy and easy to pay for. Sign up with a service like PayPal so that buyers can pay you with credit cards. More and more online shoppers use PayPal because it's fast, easy, secure, and effective. And the more ways people can pay for your art, the more art you sell.

► Try selling on eBay (don't scrunch your face-- hear me out-- people who use eBay are buyers, not lookers). At the very least, it's a cheap way to advertise. It's also a cheap way to play with keywords (see Sell Your Art Online link below) and see how many bidders you attract. Don't worry; you won't compromise your art. Think of yourself as an explorer experimenting with new ways to sell. More and more artists are selling successfully on eBay; a handful make good livings. One artist I spoke with recently has sold over 1,000 paintings on eBay-- average selling price of $280 for a grand total of $280,000-- and that's some serious cabbage. Sooner or later artists are going to figure out how to market their art directly to consumers, and sites like eBay will play significant roles in making this happen (dealers take note).

► Continuing with eBay, think about joining forces with other artists and selling on eBay as a group. Several online artist collectives have experienced varying degrees of success with this strategy. Think of yourselves as an art colony of sorts; create a group ethos, manifesto, whatever.

► As with websites, success on eBay is all about smart use of keywords, and presenting your art in ways that connect with bidders, so don't go in cold. Learn some strategies in order to maximize your success. You might start by reading Sell Your Art Successfully at Online Auctions, but that's only a start and it's written primarily for dealers and collectors. Read more here>>

Realistic Pencil Portrait Mastery Home Study Course

Finally! You Can Now Draw Like A Master...

“Discover The Secrets Of Drawing Realistic Pencil Portraits WITHOUT Wasting Your Precious Time Going Through Years Of Trials And Errors!"
Let Me Show You How You Too Can Draw Realistic Pencil Portraits Like A Master With My “Truly” Step-by-Step Guide... And Help You To Achieve Your Dream To Become A Master Pencil Artist

From The Desk Of Christopher Sia
Date: 24 June 2013

Dear Artist,

My name is Christopher Sia and for the past 5 years, I’ve been drawing pencil portraits and teaching thousands of my students to draw as well.

I was a struggling so-called artist trying to learn how to draw realistic pencil portraits.

Obviously, I failed many times.

I couldn’t even draw a decent pencil portrait because I wasn’t gifted in drawing.

I spent my hard-earned money from my part time job to attend drawing courses, but didn’t learn what I needed to achieve the realism of a masterful human pencil portrait.

I can still remember the first pencil portrait that I drew back in 2006, when I didn’t really understand how to attain my potential.

I thought it was nice so I shared it with all of my friends—but they laughed at my portrait drawing.

Looking at their drawings, I felt that I was not as skillful, couldn't draw as well as they could.

Until today, I still keep my first pencil portrait drawing on my drawing table…

After years of trials and errors, I’m now able to draw a pencil portrait like this...

This is not from overnight success. I’ve been practicing and learning for almost every single day to attain a higher level of pencil portrait drawing.

The truth is... there was this one year period that I did not improve my pencil drawing techniques at all.

After achieving the results that I wanted, I concentrated on teaching others, at the expense of myself.

Because of teaching others, I lack of practice time and stopped learning in drawing for almost a year! My pencil drawing techniques became stuck at the same level without improvement.

Deep down in my heart, I know that I’ve been satisfied for where I am in my pencil portrait drawing techniques and skills. I’ve been satisfied that I stopped improving my pencil portrait drawing skill. Read More>>

"How To Draw Caricatures" Quickly and Easily!

From: The desk of Artist, Graeme Biddle
Date: Wednesday, June 19 2013
RE: Caricature Trade Secrets Revealed!

Dear Friend,

Graeme Biddle
My name is Graeme Biddle, I am a highly successful caricature artist with over 30 years experience and I would like to share with you my secrets that I am about to take with me into retirement. Once I am out of the market and relaxing on a beach somewhere, ALL MY SECRETS will be retired with me.

I have made a tremendous career out of knowing how to draw caricatures for over 30 years and I have been paid very richly for something that has been fun and easy to do. It has amazed me just how many secret markets for this sort of work I have had to myself. So since I am about to be off the scene for good, I thought it might be a worthy idea to pass on my TRADE SECRETS, so some other up and coming artists like yourself could benefit from all my hard-earned wisdom, tips, tricks and techniques.

New Way to Do Automatic Vectorization that Works a lot Better than Existing Tools.

Trace your bitmaps with Vector Magic

Not all of you will have heard of this, but there is a process that is done in the graphic design and print industries called "vectorization." It is also sometimes called "tracing" and the prefix "auto-" is sometimes stuck in front of either word. This is the process of converting a bitmap image - described by a grid of tiny little pixels - into vector art, where the shapes are described with mathematical formulas.

The main benefits of vector art are that it can be scaled without causing pixelation or blurriness, and that it can be edited in a much more intuitive way than pixel-based images.
Anyway, this process is typically done by hand because the automatic tools for doing this just don't work well enough. In fact, a lot of designers find it is faster to just redraw an image than to clean up the garbage most auto-tracing tools produce.

But all that has changed. A couple of researchers out of the AI (that's artificial intelligence) lab at Stanford University have figured out a new way to do automatic vectorization that works a lot better than existing tools. It doesn't work on every image - some images are just too small for a computer to figure out what is going on - but it does work on enough images that it is actually useful.
In technical terms, it works best on medium- to high-resolution images that were digitally rasterized from a vector art original, and that do not contain very many shading gradients. It can handle some noise, but the quality of the result does degrade accordingly.
In basic english, don't expect miracles. If you'd have to make some educated guesses while redrawing it, chances are the computer will not make very good guesses. But if it is a clean image that is big enough to see all the little details easily, this tool should do the trick.

Anyway, they have a website where you can try it out online without downloading any software:

Beyond the first two conversions, which are free, they charge a subscription fee. If you don't like subscriptions, you can also just buy the desktop application, which works on both Mac and PC. The prices are reasonable for any professional who does this task even semi-regularly, as it saves hours and hours of time. And hand-tracing is not exactly fun work!

Strategies in Selling Vector Graphics

I repost this article from http://sellingvector.blogspot.com
Selling vector graphics needs a strategy to win. You cannot simply draw anything you like and upload them without a direction. You need to set yourself a winning strategy to gain in the long term. Yes, this is a long term game, and it is not a get-rich-quick thing. I have seen many strategies used by different artists and I believe most of them have excel in their own ways.

Producing Only Good Quality Vector

Producing good quality vector takes time. One very good vector takes about 3-7 days to produce. You take into consideration of every pixels and make sure everything is perfect before releasing it. Your portfolio will be very much smaller in this case because you can only produce 2 vectors per week. There is a big advantage in this strategy because your vector graphic is likely to sell a lot and for a very long time. A high quality vector can generate about $500 a month and will probably continue to sell for a very long time. Additional to that, you will be branded as a "celebrity" and celebrity has fans.

High quality vector.
This is a top seller at Shutterstock.

Producing a Similar Theme of Graphics Everyday

Now, this is a strategy that not many will use because it is hard to produce something similar, over and over again. But if you are a machine and full of ideas about it, this strategy can be applied to you. Producing a similar type of graphic has its advantage of its own. First, buyer who lands on your portfolio will definitely buy something from you because you have got tons of choices to choose. There are high chances that he will buy a few vector graphics from your portfolio in one time. Also, he may come back for you in the future because he knows you have a lot of choices for that particular subject.

A beautiful seamless pattern.
This is one of the best seller at Shutterstock.

Producing Single Isolated Cartoon Massively

How much is consider massive? 10000. Yes, there are vector artists who produce isolated cartoon massively. It is not crazy, is just pure hard works and creativity. Take a look at this portfolio by lineartestpilot and Cory Thoman. They have produce tons and tons of beautiful cartoons everyday and I think everybody will love these cartoons. In my personal opinions, single character cartoon don't sell well (perhaps 5 downloads per month) because it is very limited to its usage, but when one need it, they will definitely buy it for whatever price. A huge advantage in this strategy is that you can increase your portfolio size tremendously. Bigger portfolio means higher visibility. Drawing cartoon characters is fun too and you will never get boring with it. Because you are good in drawing cartoon, you can produce a lot of them in a short time. This strategy works and will definitely pay off.

Getting Out of Competition

You know, whatever things that you can think off now, has most probably been drawn by other artists thousands of time already. Competition is never good. A strategy that some use is to get out of the competition. You research on the thing you had in mind and sees if anyone else have drawn it yet; and if you could do better. Yes, there are still things that hasn't been drawn thousand of time yet and you will definitely land on the first page in the search. Being seen means a sale possibility.

If you search for the keyword "Chinese Chess" vector at Shutterstock you will get less than 10 results. This means almost no competition for this subject and you will definitely being seen. Whereas, if you search for the keyword "icon", you will get more than half a million of such results. Try to avoid competition. Do something new and unique and it will be profitable in the long run.

Drawing According to Seasons

What seasons do we have? We have Christmas, Valentine, Halloween, New Year, Independence Day, and many many more. This has never gone wrong and there will definitely be buyer on this. However, you have to upload your seasonal-theme vector a few months earlier. Clients need to get their stuff ready and graphic designers need your vectors earlier too for the preparation.

Packing Everything

You pack everything into one and sell it cheap. Yes, this basically destroy the microstock industry because you are pulling the price down. But again, if you don't do it, others will. And they will prevail, while you fail. This strategy is proven working, but whether it is worth doing it or not, is not up to me to judge. Packing everything definitely sells better but it is time consuming, and sometimes don't really sell at all.

As a conclusion, there are definitely many type of strategies to sell your vector graphics efficiently. However, it all comes down to hard work and skills. If you are really keen to go into selling vectors to make money, I recommend you to join the below agencies for a start and will it will definitely pay off.

14 Most Important Tools to Learn in Adobe Illustrator for Beginners

I repost this article from http://sellingvector.blogspot.com
If you are just starting out to learn Adobe Illustrator, then you will really get yourself into a lot of confusions and overwhelmed by all the tools that are presented to you. As a matter of fact, you only need to learn some important tools to get yourself ready for some illustration.

Below are the 14 most important tools that you will be using all the time:

  1. You must first understand well the differences between  the Two Arrows above. One is to select and move an object, while the one is to select an anchor point of an object. You can also use them to scale and modify an object.
  2. The Pen Tool is the most used tool in Adobe Illustrator. You use to draw everything.
  3. Type Tool. You use this to insert text into your illustrations.
  4. Primitive Object Tool, to draw basic shapes such as rectangle, circle, star, and etc.
  5. The color swapping feature. Do understand that every object contains background color + stroke color. The 3 small options below is for you to have more options on how you want to feature the object, either with or without a stroke/background and gradient color (shading).
  6. Stroke Menu. This is to manipulate how your stroke looks like.
  7. Gradient Menu. To create color shadings.
  8. Transparency Menu. To create opacity or alpha color, so that your object can be seen through.
  9. Color Menu. As mentioned.
  10. Path Finder Menu. This is one of my favorite tool. This is to combine or dissect two or more objects. Do experiment with this tool and you will know how useful it is.
  11. Layers Menu. To put your object on above or below another object.
  12. Character Menu. To modify your text.
  13. Transform Menu. To see the details of an object such as the location and size.
  14. Align Menu. Another favorite tool of mine. Use this to make alignment between two or more objects easier.
